Watch: LGBTIQ Russians fight back on the road to St. Petersburg in ‘I’ve only Just Begun.’
If you understand the context of this video, you’ll find it hard not to feel inspired by it.
According to the opening titles, I’ve Only Just Begun is a response to the city’s new gay-propaganda law, that bans the promotion of homosexuality to minors. In protest to the law, activist Venus Volgar marches to St. Petersburg to rescue his imprisoned friends accompanied with a small army of supporters.
As they encounter religious fundamentalists and Neo-Nazis, fisticuffs follow, but the are not beaten.
While I don’t condone violence, the video makes a very valid point. How far will you go for the rights of not just yourself, but of others as well? While we’re fighting for our rights here in Australia it is important to not forget our fellow LGBTIQ brothers and sisters who face even harsher persecutions in other countries.
