Lady GaGa brings it all to the stage for her ‘Born This Way Ball’
Thursday night I attended Brisbane’s second Lady GaGa’s Born This Way Ball, and even now I’m still trying to find the words too describe my experience. It was by far the most amazing concert I have ever attended, and trust me I’ve attended a lot.
My Born This Way Ball experience started with waiting at the Brisbane Entertainment Centre from 6am with the chance to get into the highly acclaimed Monster Pit. Needless to say by the time I had arrived there was about 15 people already in front. Then began the 13 hour wait. While at times throughout the day I found myself asking, was she really worth losing a whole day for? I can honestly say, HELL YES! I was pretty much 2nd row in the monster pit centre stage, and she Touched my hand!!! lol
The Born This Way Ball can only be described as a rock opera musical, and even then I’m not sure if it does the show justice. The minute the curtain drops and a Lady GaGa’s Gothic castle is lit up, it’s non-stop action. Intricate set pieces, elaborate lighting, a band, extremely talented dancers, hypnotizing costumes, and Mother Monster herself. For the entire length of the show it feels as if your transported into the mind of Lady GaGa. The singer gave it her all and no-one was disappointed. The show started off with GaGa riding on stage on top of a horse, that at first thought you think it’s real and after closer inspection you realise it is being controlled by people underneath. Puppetry at its best. What follows is by far one of the most exhilarating shows you will ever see.
She sings, she dances, while the whole time taking the audience on a journey through performing songs from both The Fame Monster and Born This Way Albums. She ploughs through each song without missing a beat, not to mention crawls out of the neither regions what was either a pregnant woman with her legs spread or a giant chicken, has simulated oral sex, gets beaten up, and even runs around on stage with a gun. So much happens that I just don’t know what and what not to talk about.
Surreal, inspiring, hypnotising, jaw-dropping, emotive, provocative and moving, the Born This Way Ball manifested everything Lady GaGa stands for and so much more. Contrary to what many might say, GaGa has risen to become a cultural icon who is no where near shy in her desires to push all boundaries, whether they be personal, sexual, social or political. While she’s only been around for such a short amount of time, she has become one of the biggest icons of our time, and if Madonna feels she can hold onto her crown as Queen of Pop, she better pick up her game. Lady GaGa is here and she ain’t going away any time soon.

Disclaimer: For those wondering why I have gone into details of exactly what songs were sung and what took place on stage, it is because of the following reasons. So much work has gone into creating the Born This Way Ball as the magnificent rock opera musical that it is, and to truly experience it, is to embrace every little surprise that Lady GaGa offers on stage.
