Movie Moment: ‘The Power of One’ Geel Piet’s death.
The Power of One has always been a favourite movie of mine, not to mentioned I loved the book it was based upon. The scene where Morgan Freeman’s Geel Piet is killed is probably one of the most powerful things I ever watched as a child, his murder beautifully contrasted with the inmates singing a song of defiance against the authorities that had oppressed them. This scene always get’s me. It’s a powerful sequence of music, joy and tragedy. It was because of this movie that I grew to love Freeman as an actor, not to mention later in the movie it stars a very young and cute Stephen Dorff and a young Daniel Craig playing the cruel Sgt Botha. The powerful song that the inmates sing is know as Southland Concerto. Check it out below.
It makes me want to watch the movie all over again and for those living under rock who have never seen it or even heard it, here’s the trailer
